About the Collection

This exhibit showcases pottery made during the artist’s time at Golden Bridge Pottery (GBP) in Pondicherry, the coromandel coast of India. Founded in the 1970s by Ray Meekar & Deborah Smith, GBP is known for its wood-fired stoneware, a laborious yet rewarding technique.

Wood-firing is an ancient Japanese art form. It requires constant attention over a 24-hour period, as the artists meticulously feeds the kiln with wood to reach and maintain scorching temperatures exceeding 1300 degrees Celsius. This intense heat, combined with the interaction of wood ash and flames, creates the pottery's unique character - a beautiful blend of tradition and the unpredictable nature of fire and the resulting pieces are one-of-a-kind.
